How to Get the Most Out of Your Salon Appointment
A salon appointment goes a lot smoother when you and your stylist are on the same page from the start. A little preparation and good communication are the difference between leaving thrilled and leaving unsure, so here is how to get the most out of your time in the chair.
Start with the consultation. For any big change, a cut, a new colour or a correction, ask for a consult first, either before the day or at the start of your appointment. This is a relaxed chat where the stylist looks at your hair, asks what you want, and talks through what will work. It is the best chance to get expectations right before any product touches your hair, and it costs you nothing but a few minutes.
Bring a photo, or a few. A picture shows what you are imagining far better than words, since terms like ashy, caramel or a few inches mean different things to different people. Bring examples of what you like and, just as helpfully, what you do not. Keep in mind that lighting and filters change how colour looks in photos, and the person in the picture started from their own hair, not yours.
That leads to the most important part, honest expectations. Your starting colour, hair type and condition all affect what is achievable in one visit. Going from dark to platinum, or correcting a home dye, often cannot be done safely in a single session, because pushing the hair too far in one go can damage it. A good stylist will tell you straight what is possible now and what will take more than one appointment. That honesty protects your hair and saves you disappointment.
Be upfront about your hair history too. If you have used a box dye, had a treatment, or coloured at home, say so even if it was a while ago, because previous product affects how new colour behaves. The more your stylist knows, the better the result. There is no judgement, just useful information.
Think about practical things as well. Book enough time, since colour can run two to three hours and you do not want to be rushing off halfway through. If you are new to the salon, sort your patch test at least forty eight hours ahead for colour. And if you need to reschedule, give as much notice as you can so someone else can use the slot.
Finally, speak up during and after. If something is not what you pictured, tell your stylist while you are there, since small adjustments are easy in the moment. Ask how to look after the result and which products suit your hair. Come prepared, communicate clearly, and you will get the look you want and the most value from every visit.
