How to Choose Between Balayage, Foils and Full Colour
Walking into a salon and being asked whether you want balayage, foils or a full colour can be confusing if no one explains the difference. Each one gives a different result and a different level of upkeep, so the right choice depends on the look you are after and how much maintenance fits your life.
Full colour means applying one even shade across all of your hair, including the roots. It is the go to for solid grey coverage or for a complete change of colour, like going from light to dark or warming up a flat tone. Because it covers everything, regrowth shows as a line at the roots, so you will usually want a touch up every four to six weeks to keep it looking sharp. It is the most uniform and the most predictable of the three.
Foils are where sections of hair are wrapped in foil to lift them lighter, creating defined highlights and dimension. They suit anyone wanting a brighter, more structured look with clear contrast. Foils give you control over exactly where the lightness sits, which is why they are popular for a polished, even result. Maintenance sits in the middle, with most people refreshing every six to ten weeks depending on how bold the contrast is.
Balayage is hand painted onto the surface of the hair, which creates a soft, sun kissed, grown out look. The colour is graduated so there is no hard regrowth line, which is the big advantage. Because of that, balayage is the lowest maintenance of the three, and many people stretch it out to three or four months between visits. It is ideal if you want something natural looking that does not demand frequent salon trips, though it generally keeps some depth near the roots rather than going light all over.
So how do you choose. If you need full grey coverage or a true colour change, full colour is your answer. If you want defined, even brightness and do not mind regular upkeep, foils deliver that. If you want a soft, natural look with the least maintenance, balayage is hard to beat. Your starting colour and hair condition also play a part, since going much lighter from a dark base can take more than one session to do safely.
The best move is to book a consultation and bring a photo of what you like. We will look at your hair, talk through the upkeep each option needs, and be honest about what is achievable in one visit. That way you leave with a colour you love and a clear idea of how to keep it looking good.
